The hidden benefits of Martial Arts

Introduction:

The word ‘Hinode’ literally means the rising sun in Japanese and symbolizes new beginnings. The title of this blog ‘The Soul Hi(gh)node’ captures the essence of martial arts as a medium to elevate oneself mentally and physically.

The late 19th century marked the beginning of modern martial arts. Often cited as a strength/self-defense activity, martial arts incorporates a lot more than what meets the eye.

Martial arts helps in channelizing one’s overwhelming emotions, reduces stress and anxiety, and helps with anger management. Apart from enabling an outlet for emotional outpour, this art form promotes holistic improvement in the life of the artist. Martial arts helps in increasing concentration and focus, boosting confidence and stamina.

Today, there are multiple forms of martial arts like karate, Chi Kwang Do, Taekwondo, etc. to choose from. These art styles can help us in bolstering our self-esteem, endurance, and develop toughness. Martial arts is an art form that transcends age, race, gender, color, and any other socially constructed identities. Any individual can pick up strength and stamina training exercises without even having to invest in extra gear.

I would be writing a series of blogs, each describing a martial art exercise and its effect on my life. I hope you would see the art form as a revolutionary practice, just like I do!

I have posted a short warmup workout that anyone should be able to easily perform before any hardcore exercises.

You should perform 3 repetitions of these exercises in under 5 minutes
